Ken
Ken was the lil shit of the group, always pushing the line and not really knowing when to stop. He seems to pick on Oliver as he knows he can get a reaction out of him
Why do the other boys hang out with him? They've probably known him for a while and we don't know what else is going on in Ken's life.
Because of his dickish nature, the shadow figure was able to get into this mind much easier. It works sort of like the force from Star Wars. Jedi mind tricks only work on the weak minded.
Roy (Royland)
Roy is the nice guy, he wants his friends to get along and genuinely cares for them. When things start to get a bit hectic he wants to take charge and help them out.

Roy tries to remain level headed even in stressful moments.
Oliver
Oliver is a bit sensitive and can get easily frustrated and overwhelmed. This ultimately lead to his death as his loud antics allowed for the Thistlehead to find them.
Eric
Eric was the reasonable member of the group and would usually back up Roy.
He's the song man of the group but we don't see him do much in Wairangi.
